Who We Are
American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE). Our members are nurses, correctional officers, doctors, Social Security professionals, TSA agents, law enforcement officers, park rangers, and so much more. While we represent almost every type of federal employee, the agencies with the highest memberships are the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Social Security Administration, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Homeland Security.

AFGE is proud to stand with our fellow union members across the country and has been affiliated with the AFL-CIO, America’s largest labor federation, since 1932. We believe that the House of Labor is strongest when all working people stand together. Since 1997, all AFGE locals have been affiliated with their respective state federations.

Our Leaders and Organization
AFGE is comprised of 12 geographic districts representing every state, U.S. territory and the District of Columbia. Each district has its own elected national vice president and a field office located in the district. Our union is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The three elected executive officers and the 12 elected national vice presidents make up our National Executive Council. We are also made up of more than 70 agency-based councils and over 900 locals.
